Cecil, a well-known male lion, living in Hwange Game Reserve, in Zimbabwe was lured away from the sanctuary of the park and killed by an illegal party of big game hunters July 1, 2015, according to the Zimbabwean government.
The hunter who killed the lion was identified by conservation groups as American Dr. Walter James Palmer, a dentist in Minneapolis.

On July 29th,2015 a protest was planned at the site of the Dentist's office in Bloomington, Minnesota. I happened to be in town so I decided to paint at the protest site.
“I was inspired to paint a larger-than-life portrait of Cecil at the protest site out of grief for this beautiful creature who was killed for “sport.” This was my quiet protest for this senseless killing. As a portrait painter, I found the images of Cecil inspiring and spiritual. In this case, it is a portrait.”
