“With the portrait of Maryann Graziano, you have created, I think, pictorially and spiritually, one of the best portraits painted in this century. And so go forth with courage.”
– Pietro Annigoni
I began this work in Italy, painting in a classic 19th century technique inspired by the portraits of Ingres.
Every portrait is an opportunity not only to record a person’s image with detail, feeling and expression but also to reflect the soul of the sitter–to look beyond the physical toward the spiritual.
As my mentor Maestro Annigoni taught me, each portrait begins with a drawing. These drawing studies are necessary in order to capture the essence of the composition and the beginnings of a likeness.
